Unit 12: Taking The Lead
In this year when we were told to take the lead in directing others for our fringe project, I immediately knew I wanted to direct a short piece involving my classmates. I teamed up with George who shared the same vision as me, also wanting to do a piece, coming to agree on performing the show "Bouncers", written by John Godber. We chose this as it was something we had always wanted to put on, as well as we knew who we'd want to do it with, those people being Noah, Keiran and Connor. However, because the show has 4 characters, me and George agreed to putting him in it as the fourth, and I would focus on directing them. Unfortunately, due to the length of the show, we came to the realisation we had to cut it down majorly, to fit into the festival, ultimately choosing a scene from each section where the characters change; The opening with the Bouncers, The Lads to The Girls, to then finally ending with The Lads. This was a great choice as the scenes we chose really summed up the comedic heart of the show, which the direction we took with the script really enhanced. We also realised that our classmate Scarlet was directing Shakers, which was also written by John Godber, set from the perspective of female bar staff, which directly connected to Bouncers. This led us to teaming up with Scarlet to merging the two pieces together, making it a larger project than it was originally planned to be. Another way I took the lead was with my production role, making the programmes, as I often had to get the whole classes attention to get them to send me paragraphs for their names, aswell as organise headshots and when people would be taking them.
