TASK 2:

Lovely Bones Audition:

Check Blog Post Week Commencing 1st of April

As well for the auditions, I answered these questions to help further understand the character I was auditioning for.

1. What were your initial thoughts on the script that you have chosen?

To begin with I was quite doubtful of the choice to perform lovely bones as I found it a very interesting kind of script due to the nature and themes involved within it, however, once I fully read it and analysed the characters, I found myself incredibly excited for the chance to perform it.  Furthermore, I am interested to see how we stage the show, as reading through the script it is evident when directing we’ll have to take some creative liberty as how the staging is written it seems very difficult to all put together.

2. Which particular character/s do you like/ resonate with you?

I adore the characters of the father, Jack, and the man who rapes and murders young Susie salmon, Mr HarveyFirstly, with the character of Jack I found myself getting deeply emotionally invested in his emotional journey through the play, going from grieving to vengeful, making it cloud his judgement and seem unstable to the officers who are just trying to help himHowever, Mr Harvey excited me the most because, as a character, it is something I never thought of, or could see myself playing, due to the nature of what he does in the scriptI felt like his descent into madness while he gets tangled in the web of lies he’s creating is incredibly compelling, and his final moments of him getting killed while trying to commit another act of violence is incredibly gratifying to the audience.

3. In what ways do you think that this particular piece will challenge you?

I feel going for the role of Mr Harvey is an incredible challenge to me mentally as trying to get in and stay in the mindset of someone who would do these things will be incredibly difficult, even more so acting out some of the heinous things he does in the opening scenes of the play.  I feel I have never played a character who even comes close to the depravity of Mr Harvey, as I haven’t even played a villain yet, let alone a monster, so it will definitely be out of my comfort zone and a challenge for meEven despite the role of Mr Harvey, performing any character in the script will be incredibly exciting and equally as challenging, as portraying the emotional turmoil all the characters go through will be rough, as I’m sure people will struggle trying to relate to the characters, so will probably have to go to some dark places mentally to feel even a half of what the characters are.

4. What three areas of research do you think you should be covering to be able to take on this challenge?

I believe the 3 main areas of research should be: The characters, the time period in which The Lovely Bones took place in, and serial killersI think looking into serial killers is important as it will help bring Mr Harvey more to life if I could investigate and maybe get in the mindset of some serial killersI could do this by watching some documentaries, such as DahmerA reason I also want to look into the time period is so I can deeper understand the characters, as I feel when the script takes place is incredibly important.

5. Why did you choose the monologue that you have brought today?

I chose this monologue as I felt it really shared the same characteristics and vibe that was right for Mr Harvey, as its more important for me to play the more disturbing offender side to him rather than the unassuming side of him.

6. What does this monologue that you have brought tell us about you as an actor?

It shows I have the capabilities of showing the disgusting perverted version of him, which I feel is more important to nail, as I want to make sure the audience are very disturbed whenever I enter the stage.  I felt this monologue really connected with the character, due to Martin (who delivers my monologue) is incredibly similar to Harvey, however he is making a sick confession to someone he is about to end the life of.
