Independent study task: Character and Subtext Exploration- Connections!

Subtext Mapping Task:

Scene 9.

(MY SUBTEXT ADDITIONS ARE IN BRACKETS IN BOLD)

Jay is nursing a bloodied nose. He has his head back. Matt is feeding sheets of toilet roll to him as he dabs at his nose. Sam is there, mic out and at the ready. Maddie enters, takes in the scene.

Maddie: What happened.

Matt: He got jumped by Jamesy and his gang.  (Jay could interrupt with his next line)

Jay: And Bo. Told you.  (Jay feels like he was always right about Bo so is giving Maddie a hard time for not believing him.  To portray this he could roll his eyes at Maddie.)

Maddie: Mate I’m so sorry.

Maddie hugs Jay.

Sam: I need to interview you about this Jay.

Jay: I told you Sam, no.  (Jay is frustrated at Sam for constantly overstepping his boundaries to show to the world, so could say this through gritted teeth to avoid getting himself too angry at Sam.)

Matt: From now on anywhere you go we go too.

Jay: Seriously Matt? I don’t want you to be my bodyguard. I can’t live like that. (Pause) He was waiting, biding his time! He must’ve been watching me. For all I know he’s been watching me tidy up the shrine then wrecking it all over again when I leave.  (Despite denying Matt's help, he's still terrified of being attacked by Jamesy and his gang a second time, as well as still believing Jamesy has been defacing Colm's grave, despite being his brother) 

Maddie: But you’re going to report this, right?

Sam: If you’re going to the peelers then why not give an interview to the school radio? It’ll be an exclusive about homophobic hate crime.

Jay: It’s not the kind of publicity I need right now. Sorry Sam. (While still being polite, Jay is irritated with Sam, wanting her to leave him alone, so could breathe a sigh of relief when Sam exits)

Sam exits.

Jay: I’m not letting Jamesy get away with this. He was toe to toe with me Maddie, right in my face. It was like looking at a demonic Colm. Fuckin surreal.  (Jay feels helpless in this situation as he feels he can't help but feel his memories of Colm are being tainted by Jamesy, hanging his head in somewhat defeat)

Maddie: What did you say to him?

Jay: He said he wanted a word. I said here’s two: fuck off.  (He chuckles to himself as he feels proud of him standing his ground and not backing down from Jamesy)

Maddie and Matt laugh in spite of the seriousness of what’s happened. Jay sees the humour in it too and joins in.

Before I had time to think about what was coming out of my mouth I was asking him why he’s obsessed with me, maybe he’s queer too. That’s when this happened.  (Jay shakes his head knowing that he shouldn't have let himself get so worked up in the situation and saying those words, which he feels may have been what pushed Jamesy over the edge to actually attack him)

Jay touches his nose and winces.

Matt: Fuckin hell Jay! Respect!

A beat, then Jay grows serious again.

Jay: I got lucky. He heard cop sirens so he legged it, fuckin coward. But the look on

his face? He really wanted to hurt me.  (Jay is terrified of Jamesy and feels hopeless, not even looking his friends in the eyes, knowing Jamesy may have actually killed him)

Week commencing 14th of October

  Monday 14th of October This morning we played a new game called G'day Shiela, which was a memory game which made us remember who we were close to.  We played this game to improve our skills at remembering multiple things at once, as we had to speak in an accent, and the names of the two people to our right.  The rest of the day we put our full attention on Ghostlight Tours, with me, Connor and Adam going off to rehearse in the Black Box room ourselves, where we focussed completely on the first scene as it helped us get into character and it was the hardest part to learn, due to the rest of our dialogue mostly being short speeches before each section.  For now I just need to focus on getting of script for the first few pages as the show is actually quite close. Globe Show Week and Evaluation

  Monday 21st of October Today was our first day at The Globe, one day before our first show.  To begin with, we warmed up by playing a few games like Splat so we were energised.  Since the first Tuesday show was the other cast, I was going to be an Aide in the One Flew Over segment of the tour, as the more people occupying the area in that scene, the more realistic it would be.  However, because my show is on the Wednesday, I still need to keep on top of my lines for The Sceptic so this morning Me, Connor and Adam focused on running through our lines together so we knew we had them fully learnt, since now we were in the venue some parts of the tour had been swapped around.  After lunch, me and the other people in the OFO section went through what we would be doing during Nurse Ratchet's section, like all turning to look at the audience at the same time during parts of her speech.   Tuesday 22nd of October This was the day of the first show so we immed...

Week Commencing 7th of October

Monday 7th of October Today in the morning we were still practicing for another Ghost Light audition as the tour guides hadn't been casted still.  Everyone who wanted to be a tour guide went to the black box room to develop the character they would like to play.  I sat and discussed my ideas for the theatre with both Faith and Connor, where we learnt how we all saw the character in a similar way.  After we spent time making notes, we got into the groups of 3 of the Sceptic, Theatre Reviewer and Mystic, where we practiced the audition piece, really getting into character, and even performing it in front of a few of our peers.  Once we were confident, we went to the dance studio to show it to Kelly, making sure to do it the best we'd done yet, as she was still unsure on who she wanted for the tour guides.
