Week Commencing 23rd of September

Monday 23rd of September

Today we focused on preparation for The Globe.  We began by working on moving as a large group without communicating with each other to add to the horror element of the performance.  We started this exercise by each standing in a random place around the room, then began to move at the same time as each other.  Once we had mastered doing that, we moved to running at the same time and stopping as each other, which was more difficult as we had to go from a quick speed to completely still.  After this, we began rehearsing our audition pieces for the globe and the tour guides were given a short script that we ha to learn for our audition, so Kelly could see the chemistry of the tour guides and how we portrayed them, as they were a completely blank character and was up to us on how we wanted to play them.  Me and Delroy ran through the scene a few times to get an idea of the lines and how to deliver them before the end of the day.

This morning we had independent study time so I spent the time making notes on my audition scene on how to play the guide, as well as searching other characters similar, like if I should play him overly energetic like Willy Wonka, or more sarcastic and critical like Statler and Waldorf from The Muppets.  This helped me think on how I could deliver my lines and how I would keep my character consistent throughout.  After this we went back to the dance studio to work on the Dear Evan Hansen duologue with our partners.  Me and Layla ran through the lines a few times before putting it on its feet and adding movement into it.  Once our lesson was finished I went back into the LRC to look over my audition lines one more time as the auditions are tomorrow.

Today was audition day, which meant me and Delroy spent all morning going through our duologue to give our best performance to Kelly.  Before our audition, I managed to get off script, which helped me add more characterisation as I could add more hand movements, such as going through a notepad when I was complaining to the other critic.  We also practiced it infront of a few classmates so they could give us notes on how to improve it, which was very helpful as it made us know what we could improve for our audition.  During our audition, we played very well off of eachother and it went smoothly, with Kelly telling us she was impressed with us both going for such a large role at the start of year as we were very good performing together last year aswell.  After everyone had auditioned, she called everyone back into dance studio where she asked who would be willing to perform their scene again infront of the rest of the class.  Me and Delroy jumped at this opportunity since it would give us a feel as to what it would be like leading a real audience and so we could get more feedback.  This went very well as we also then saw our other classmates interpretations on the characters which was very interesting.  Overall, I believe today went well and we did our best for our audition.

Thursday 26th of September

In the morning we had a later start as we had a LAMDA workshop, a prestigious university looking for more diversity from our area.  In this workshop we were all given a monologue which we performed while walking around the room, which helped improve our diction.  We also looked at how to analyse monologues, giving reasons to what our character was saying.  After this, we had a lesson with Tom, where we focused on the musical number "Toys!"  by practising the song in its different sections, splitting up the parents, children, and people interested in Geopetto.  Once we had learnt each part, we got into put into pairs of a parent and child, and I was a child, where we were told to drag our parent around the store while singing our part.  This helped bring the song to life as there were work benches that we imagined had toys on them, as well as adding a small part of choreography so the whole scene wasn't just improvisation.  We also had George as Geopetto walking around the toy shop, avoiding the rushing children and taking in the carnage of the scene.
