General research to enhance the character of Harvey:
When researching for the character of Mr Harvey to make my performance of him more realistic, I watched Stanley Tucci’s performance in the film adaptation of “The Lovely Bones”. While the stage show is quite different to the film, Mr Harvey remains quite the same between both adaptations. Stanley Tucci plays up his creepy side, especially in the bunker scene, which is helped by the up-close camera angles and the cramped feeling that the shots give the viewer. So I wasn’t just copying off how Stanley played him, I also looked into other serial killers, most notably Jeffery Dahmer, to see how they acted, seeing if I could draw parallels between him and Harvey. I watched the Netflix show “Dahmer”, where he is played by Evan Peters, so I could see how Dahmer acted when being confronted by the police, as I saw the character of Mr Harvey in Jeffery Dahmer. Another fictional serial killer I looked into was Dexter, however I struggled to find similarities between the two characters, as Harvey only kills young girls whereas Dexter targets criminals. Due to this I focussed on making my performance more similar to Dahmer, analysing how he acts different to being around the police, to his change when he's around his victims.
For my costume, I looked at 80's styles as well as his costume in the movie. To get the right look, I felt like Mr Harvey would tend to use clothes that are quite dull, as on the outside he is quite a boring person, so I achieved this by looking in charity shops, searching for clothes that fit the 80's aesthetic but didn't pop out too much. Because I didn't want to stray too far from the film costume, I plan on wearing very similar glasses to the ones he wore in the film, as I thought they also complimented his character incredibly in a strange way.
My costume for George Harvey:
I feel this research I have done will help me enhance my performance, as Mr Harvey is a kind of character I have never played so using this research I have done will help me make my performance more down to earth and realistic. For my production role on the programme, I looked at the old programmes our course had made to get ideas for mine, focussing on the last years end of year programme, as last year we also had everyone write a paragraph for the programme.
